Building Your Ad

Document Setup

  • Size - Your Chronicle sales representative should supply you with your ad size, or please scroll up to the listed print spec sizes on this page.
  • Color - All ads should be supplied in either CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & K Black) or Grayscale (black and white) color mode. PMS and spot colors should not be used. Any elements that are not set as CMYK or Grayscale will be automatically converted to appropriate color mode in our ad processing system. This may cause a change in appearance of the images.
  • Artwork Resolution - Recommended resolution is 300 dpi at final crop dimensions for images, 1200 dpi for line art (minimum of 200 dpi for images, 600 dpi for line art). Images taken from web sites often use a much lower resolution (72 dpi) and do not print clearly. Numerically enhancing resolution in Adobe Photoshop® or other software will not improve clarity of the image.
  • Image Color - Best reproduction of images results from set endpoints and light, contrasting mid-tones. Expect that images will be darker in print than they appear on-screen; dot gain on press will range from 18-25% depending on product placement.

Rules & Type

  • Rules - Line widths should not be less than .25 pt and should be one color when possible.
  • Text - Avoid using registration black for body copy. Rich black should only be used for fonts larger than 24 pt. Smaller text should be one color if possible in order to avoid registration problems.
  • Attributes - Where possible, avoid using font attribute buttons (bold, italics, etc.) to change a font. Ex: If Times Italics is desired, use the actual Times Italics font, not the italics attribute.
  • Type Sizes - Type larger than 10 points is optimal. Type smaller than 5 points is not recommended.
  • Reversed Type - Reversed type is light type that appears on a darker background. Reversed type works best on a single color background, but if using a multi-color background, we recommend type larger than 12 points. Bold-face fonts are also recommended.

Bleed & Trim

  • Bleed - This is a printable area outside the trim line that will be trimmed away during the cutting process (bindery) to ensure a background color or graphic will run off of the edge with no visible margin. Most ads will NOT utilize a bleed. Only full-page ads in specific products will be trimmed. Your sales representative can provide more information. We recommend setting bleed at 1/4" but no less than 1/8". The bleed option should be selected during the initial document setup.
  • Trim - This is the size of the completed piece from edge to edge. Trim size is the same as document size in Quark and InDesign.
  • Margins - Margins denote the area inside the trim line where no text or critical graphic should be. This ensures they will not be trimmed off during the cutting process. Any graphic that extends outside the margins should extend all the way to the bleed. Margins will only be relevant if your ad has a bleed. If it does, set margins at .25" inside the trim line.

Creating a PDF

Native Document

  • Pasteboard - Remove all non-printing elements from the pasteboard.
  • Pages - Remove all blank pages from the native document.
  • Annotations - Remove all editing annotations from the document.
  • Fonts & Links - Verify that all images are properly linked and no fonts are missing from the document before exporting a PDF.

Settings

  • Export - Export the PDF from the file using the PDF/X-1A: 2001 setting.
  • Bleed - If your job is built with bleed, please select the "Use Document Bleed Settings" in the output options markup window.
  • Verify - Make sure to open your newly created PDF to verify that all appears as it should.

Submitting Your Ad

  • Recommended File Type - Print-ready Portable Document Format (PDF)
  • Submitting via AdDrop - Ad Drop is a Chronicle provided, digital ad delivery service available through any web browser.
